Paolo received a doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering from the Politecnico of Torino and – on the basis of a Fulbright post-graduate fellowship – completed his studies in the United States, where he acted as a Research Assistant at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, with a major research project in the chemistry of coal liquefaction; his academic background also includes the positions of Research and Teaching Assistant at the Politecnico of Torino and at the University of Waterloo (Canada).

Since 1995 Paolo is a contract professor with the University of Torino, Faculty of Biotechnology, charged with the teaching of the Undergraduate Course “Patents in Biotechnology” and of the graduate course “Management of Biotechnological Enterprises”, which both focus on Intellectual Property matters.

Paolo has extensively lectured on IP matters and particularly on Opposition, Appeal and Oral Proceedings before the EPO, as a tutor for CEIPI, epi and the European Patent Academy.

He is presently chairman of the Professional Qualifying Committee of the epi with responsibility for organisation of EQE training and CPE.

Paolo authored several articles on IP matters and is the author of the Biotechnological Section of the book “La Riforma del Codice della Proprietà Industriale” Giuffré Ed. 2011.



Work experience

After a relatively short period of employment in industry (ENI GROUP) as a researcher on alternative energy sources, Paolo joined Jacobacci & Partners in 1982, where he qualified as Italian and European Patent Attorney (1986).

As a patent attorney, Paolo has been representing and advising Italian and foreign clients ranging from Research Institutions and highly specialized local companies to multinational corporations.



Professional focus

Paolo has an extensive practice in drafting and prosecuting European and Italian patent applications and a solid experience of handling oppositions and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, including multiparty proceedings and hearings. Paolo has also an extensive experience in IP litigation acquired by acting as ex parte and ex officio technical Counsel before the Court of Torino and Milano in several national and multinational patent litigations relating, among others, to Cimetidine, pro-urokinase, recombinant insulin, Factor VIII and Factor IX, diagnostics for HCV and HIV, Cox –II selective drugs, lovastatin, lansoprazole, itraconazole, cyclosporine and vitamin D derivatives.

Although based in Turin, Paolo is frequently in Munich for hearings and meetings with clients.



Areas of expertise

Paolo handles IP matter in the field of pharmaceuticals, chemical and biotechnological products, medical devices and food products and has particular experience in the fields of CCK antagonists, anti-inflammatory agents, PP inhibitors, anticoagulant factors, food supplements, stents and catheters, biodegradable polymeric materials and, dulcis in fundo, chocolate and confectionery products and machinery related thereto.
