Work experience
After a short time working in industry (ENI GROUP) as a researcher on alternative energy sources, Paolo joined Jacobacci & Partners in 1982, where he qualified as an Italian and European Patent Attorney (1986).
As a patent attorney, Paolo represents and advises Italian and foreign clients ranging from re-search institutions and highly specialized local companies to multinational corporations.

Paolo received a doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering from the Politecnico of Torino and – on the basis of a Fulbright post-graduate fellowship – completed his studies in the United States, where he acted as a Research Assistant at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, with a major research project in the chemistry of coal liquefaction. His academic background also includes the positions of Research and Teaching Assistant at the Politecnico of Torino and at the University of Waterloo (Canada).
Paolo has been a contract professor with the University of Torino, Faculty of Biotechnology, where he taught the Undergraduate Course “Patents in Biotechnology” and is currently teaching the graduate course “Management of Biotechnological Enterprises”, which focuses on Intellectual Property matters.
Paolo has lectured extensively on IP matters with a particular focus on Opposition, Appeal and Oral Proceedings before the EPO, as a tutor for CEIPI, epi and the European Patent Academy.
He is presently chairman of the Professional Qualifying Committee of the epi with responsibility for organisation of EQE training and CPE.
Paolo has authored several articles on IP matters and is the author of the Biotechnological Section of the book “La Riforma del Codice della Proprietà Industriale” Giuffré Ed. 2011.

 

Professional focus

Paolo’s primary focus is on drafting and prosecuting European and Italian patent applications. Paolo also has substantial experience handling oppositions and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, including multiparty proceedings and hearings.

Paolo has also extensive experience in IP litigation and has acted as ex parte and ex officio technical Counsel before the Court of Torino and Milano in several national and multinational patent litigations relating to, for example pro-urokinase, recombinant insulin, Factor VIII and Factor IX, diagnostics for HCV and HIV, Cox –II selective drugs, lovastatin, lansoprazole, itraconazole, cyclosporine and vitamin D derivatives, glatiramer, tadalafil and oxycodone.

 

Areas of expertise

Paolo handles IP matter in the field of pharmaceuticals, chemical and biotechnological products, medical devices and food products and has particular experience in the fields of CCK antagonists, anti-inflammatory agents, PP inhibitors, anticoagulant factors, food supplements, stents and catheters, biodegradable polymeric materials and, dulcis in fundo, chocolate and confectionery products and machinery related thereto.
