Dr., Italian and European Patent Attorney entitled to act before the Unified Patent Court, Professional Representative in Community Design matters before the EUIPO. Rebecca graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Catania and completed a postgraduate specialization in Medical Genetics at the University of Catania.

Work experience

Rebecca worked for many years as a researcher, both in academy and industry (DIBIT, San Raffaele Biomedical Science Park in Milan; GlaxoSmithKline in Verona; Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, in Stockholm), where she developed a very strong scientific knowledge and broad technical expertise relating to many different aspects within the fields of life sciences, diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. She also acquired a deep knowledge of the various aspects of medicinal product development. Prior to joining Jacobacci & Partners in 2018, Rebecca worked for eight years as in-house IP specialist in a multinational company based in Italy operating in the field of diagnostics, and she handled patent work also for the company’s subsidiaries in the United States, Germany and Ireland.

Professional focus

Rebecca has extensive experience on drafting and prosecuting Italian, European and International patent applications, and in handling Italian SPC applications. During her work experience, she has been involved in numerous product development projects involving, in particular, patent landscape and Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) searches and analysis as well as in due diligence projects. Rebecca regularly provides infringement and validity assessments, and she acts as an ex parte technical expert in national and multinational patent litigations in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical areas. In her role, Rebecca also assists Italian and international clients in design protection, specializing in the drafting and prosecution of Italian and Community Design applications and in handling International Design Registration through the Hague System.

Areas of expertise

Rebecca’s primary focus is on biotechnological, pharmaceutical and chemical matters. She has extensive experience in drug development, diagnostic assays and biomarkers discovery, relating to various clinical areas such as infectious diseases and neurologic disorders. Her technical expertise is very broad, covering immunological and nucleic acid techniques, antibodies, recombinant proteins and peptides, antisense oligonucleotides, platforms for transcriptomic and proteomic studies and cellular biology.
