We keep company with a special edition of our JCuriosity heading, for this occasion in the Xmas edition version, with the help of Maurizio Franco.

We will take you on a journey through the symbolic gifts of the last decades, those objects that young and old have wished to find under the Xmas tree. Iconic and… generally protected by a design. Are you ready?

Lego

Who has never received or given a set of Lego bricks for Christmas? From Duplo for the little ones, to sets dedicated to animated films, Legos are an evergreen of Christmas gifts.
The company, that has been producing them for decades, is Danish: the brand was registered in 1954 and the bricks patented in 1958. In the picture, a drawing for a toy figure - a further evolution of the game - recorded in the 1970s.

Star Wars

The STAR WARS movies are objects of veneration and devotion for many, as for the action figures of the stars of the movie, a Christmas gift appreciated by children and not only...
Did you know that LUCASFILM had protected all the toys deriving from the movies by filing the appropriate #design? For example, the legendary master YODA was protected by the US265754 design

Nintendo

In the early 1990s, one of the most requested Christmas gifts from children around the world was the GameBoy. This monochromatic console, which Nintendo had proposed just as a simple, resistant and cheap game, was in fact a worldwide success, and even today its design is one of the most recognized in the history of video games. In the picture, the registration of the request for an ornamental design, in the name of Nintendo, dated 1989.

Giochi Preziosi - Emiglio

It was called Emiglio with the “g” and was launched with the TV adv "Emiglio is better". Today's adults will remember its hyper colourful design, but who remembers what this robot did?
In any case, the ornamental design was registered in Italy by its inventor, Enrico Preziosi, and many children had requested it as a "super technological" gift for Christmas.

Tamagotchi

It was the late 1990s, when suddenly the whole world started playing a small egg-shaped handheld video game. Born in Japan, Tamagotchi was a "life simulator": a game whose goal was to grow your own digital pet. More than 82 million copies have been sold... and you, did you have one?

xBox 360

Launched in 2005 and in production for nearly 11 years, the Xbox360, made by Microsoft, has held a place of honour in the bedrooms of many teens. Compared to other consoles, it could be placed vertically and implement a new wireless controller. As much desired by children as hated by parents, who feared that video games would steal valuable study time… And you, were you more from Xbox, Playstation or Wii?
