Today the Olympic games begin: we all know how essential it is for athletes (but not only) to reintegrate mineral salts, such as potassium, in the body.
But few know that the first US patent was granted on July 31, 1790, when George Washington was US President, actually for a method of production of potassium carbonate (from the German Pottasche, or from the English Pot-ash) to Samuel Hopkins.
Before the discovery of the possibility of extraction from rocks, in fact, potassium was produced exclusively by boiling wood ash in huge pots (Pot-ash).
