What is software protection?

Software protection is the protection of information that is stored on hardware and used by a computer system to perform operations. The protection of software is considered to include the protection of algorithms, program codes and graphical interfaces. It makes use of more than one tool, each of which protects one aspect of a programme. More in detail:

- Algorithms: as an expression of a processing or control procedure of a technical character, can naturally be protected by an invention patent.

- Program codes: written in the language and in the form adopted by the programmer, can be protected by copyright.

- Graphical interfaces and icons: designed to communicate with the user, can be protected through regulations concerning designs or models.

Advantages

All companies (small, medium or large) producing software can derive advantages from the protection of software, as well as the companies that are authorized to use the software. On one hand, the various types of protection available transforms a set of algorithms, codes and icons into a recognized corporate asset. On the other hand, software protection ensures that the companies using the software can benefit from technological progress that is necessary to shorten times and distances and improve the quality of life of each user.

With decades of experience, Jacobacci & Partners provides assistance to some of the world's leading companies in the sector. We combine technical competence with regular updates that are essential for interpreting the legislation and jurisprudence of each country and assisting clients to adapt to frequent changes in the law.

Risks

Not protecting software means undermining the economic position of the company producing this asset and endangering a real corporate asset - the ideas and principles that gave rise to the software in the first place.
